RacingNorton Newsletter No.44 : Summer 2024

Current projects - Douglas Update - It Fires Up At Long Last! (well for a few seconds anyway)

I am not sure about you - but for me in recent years, the hustle and bustle of normal life - and trying to pay the normal bills has taken precedence over our wonderful hobbie of restoring and riding bikes.

I know this may sound a bit silly, given my own personal position - in that I get to work with historic bikes most every day .. . as my business is centered around that - but actually, I have always been very strict in that regard - my own projects are completely divorced from my business, the business has to pay the bills - so that gets precedence, and my own projects come a very poor 'second'.

I think for many small business'es the same is true . . . I have resigned myself to the fact that my own projects are very likely to take a back seat until much later one - either I keep on working until I drop off my perch . . . or someone pays me an insane amount of money to buy the SOHC/OHV parts business off me (I dont want to give anyone any ideas . . .but feel free to contact me with an offer if you are seriously contemplating it . .. you may be suprised by what you could buy!).

Anyway - all that said, and although still working on my own (my daughter still on maternaity leave for the next few months) . . . I have been trying to regain at least one day a week - i.e. Sunday's, to work on my own projects . . .and finally I have made some progress on fettling the 1919 Douglas 2 3/4hp TT Rep - which had last been worked on in later Summer 2023.

Nova and Grandad

1919 Douglas 2 3/4hp (TT Replica) - First Start Up

At long last - I finally got a chance to do some final fettling on the Douglas - to a point where it fired up for the first time.

Things were not straight forward - and ultimately, I had to swop over to a later Amal 274 (rather than the Douglas Amac) temporarily . . .

Click on the picture above to see a Youtube update . . . but still work to do to get it running cleanly as I write this update

It has not been easy fettling it - in fact it seems like it has been fighting me all the way!, but actually, just working on a 100+ year old bike has been fun in its own way - and some of the issues are not ones that any owner of a modern (by 'modern' I mean post 1930!!) bike is likely to face - I mean how many times have you ever had to figure how to remove leather belt links from your final drive, or remembering to put a plastic tray under the bike every time you turn it over on a clean floor .. . because it has a 'Total Loss' oil system - i.e. the oil only goes one way after it has gone through the engine - vertically downwards!

Anyway, as at September 2024 as I write this - it is still not fully fettled yet . . . but the big news is it has fired up!, and I am trying to wrap up all the last 18 months of final fettling i.e. a couple of hours work on it every 4 weeks!) into a Youtube video. I hope to have this published in the next week or two and give it as a link for the next Newsletter.

Trials SOHC Norton
A Long Term Project Gets A Bit Of Attention

- Mid 1930's SOHC Trials Norton

A few months ago I was trying to sort through some boxes of my own stuff - searching for patterns for parts I was intending to make in the near future - and also at sthe same time trying to sort out some parts in cupboards I had not seen for a while. This included some engine parts for a long term Norton project that I have been thinking of trying to put together sooner rather than later - before i am too decrepid to 'Green Lane' any more -

A Mid 1930's SOHC Trials Norton

A few SOHC machines were prodiuced in the 1930's in factory Trials Trim, and below is a picture of Jack Williams who I gather was one of the most succesful Norton trials exponents in the 1930's. This photo is dated 1933 and actually - that is very close to the spec of engine I am using - which is approx 1932.

Loosely assembled here - there is lots of work to do, but I will try and give a short update on recent work In next few weeks

www.RacingNorton.co.uk - Ways of Working Update

For those regular customers who have been reading the www.RacingNorton.co.uk Homepage, or just been placing recent orders - you will know that back in September 2023 my daughter came down really very poorly (diabetes and then later, pregnancy related) - and was not able to work.

Since then, although we are really pleased to be the grandparents of her daughter (and our first grandchild) called Nova, who is beautiful, Steph has been on continued maternity leave - and actually still has some serious underlying medical issues.

The upshot of this - as I have been posting on our homepage - is that I am having to process the online orders on my own now - and think it is inevitable this will continue for the near forseeable future (at least!), and that online orders are likely to take at least 3 - 4 weeks to process.

I am trying to take all orders in the order they are placed - but if for whatever resaon you are in a valid hurry - and the order is easy to pick . . . I am trying to accomodate where I can.- just email me on the email address below and I will respond if I can within 2 days.

However, for the moment - what I would ask all customers is - to plan ahead, particularly when placing the larger orders . . . if you know you are going to require parts in the coming weeks - then best to place the order asap - then it will be in the queue - and just as importantly . . . our stock count will show if the part is available (and generally - allocate it to the next customer in line who places the order).

If I might just iterate again though - if you decide you dont want to progress wtih the order you have placed with us - I would really appreciate if you can just email me on paul.norman@racingvincent.co.uk to let me know, it would be really helpful - thanks.

And just for visibility - I am doing all I can to process as many orders each week as I can - but I also have to devote part of the week to manufacture of parts myself, as well as talking to my other manufacturers and suppliers - hope you understand.

Finally - I just want to remind customers - our Sales email is not currently being monitored (it just sends automated Order Status updateds) - so if you do need to ask a question or check the status of your order. . then just email on my own email - and I will do what I can to help.- this is the email address:

New Products and Restocked Parts - This Newsletter

We have been extremely busy since our last Newsletter at the end of 2023 - we have re-manufactured many parts (both my main CNC manufacturers, spring makers etc - but myself as well with my own CNC) - so hopefully you will see some of our most popular parts (that were showing out of stock a short while ago) - now back available again. Actually, because I was not getting time to work on this Newsletter - in the end I have decided to just publish it (at end of May) as it is shown here - but there is actually more new parts than showing, so I already have a follow up Newsletter to cover the other new and restocked parts - try and get that out in next month as well

So hopefully, you will find something in the Newsletter below of interest to you - particularly as for the last 6 months I had been trying to concentrate on remanufacturing those CNC parts we make which are most in demand - but I am aware I have a long way to go yet, and I am afraid that some long time out of stocks, may just stay that way for a while - as the list is quite long.

Website Work - www.RacingVincent.co.uk - Upgraded - But No New Articles Yet

I said in the last Newsletter I had given our sister www.RacingVincent.co.uk website a major upgrade recently - and have now made it 'Responsive' (ie.the homepage will adapt to whatever device you are reading the website from).

I also said I would now be working to try and introduce some new restoration articles on my own projects, and maybe some Youtube Video update links.

Well . . . I am sorry to say that that second bit has not happened yet! .. . while struglling just to keep the RacingNorton parts business going, while working on my own at this time (my daughter Steph not likely to return for quite a while yet) . . . however, I am halfway through about 3 different articles, and working on a Youtube Douglas restoration article as well at the moment. But none of them have been published since my last Newsletter. Sorry about that . . . but hoping at least one of them will be ready soon, and a few other Blog and short updates also planned in the next few months if I can find the time.

So that about it for this Newsletter - and as I said, if you are a customer placing orders with us and you need a status update on an order, because it is taking longer than you expected - dont forget to email me directly on paul.norman@racingvincent.co.uk , not our sales@racingvincent.co.uk email - which is notbeing monitored while my daughter is off work, it is just sending out automated order status updates, thanks.

Best wishes

Paul Norman

New Products This Newsletter

New Norton Girder Fork and M30M40 Petrol Tank Mount - Bolts With Original Norton 'Reduced Hex' Heads of Correct Curved Profile - or 'Wasted' Racing Versions

Girder Fork Handlebar Mount Screws
New Item 1226 - Norton Girder Fork Handlebar Srews
These stainless steel girder fork handlebar screws are of the original and very distinctive style as fitted to pre-War Girder Fork handlebar mount brackets - botth the rubber mount type shown here, but also the earlier non-rubber mount type.

These screws have the correct 'Reduced Hex' imperial heads, which are deeper than standad bolts (to account for the hex being smaller than standard bolts), as well as the distinctive Norton pattern curved head.

As a final touch we also polish the head, so they look really pretty as well!

Norton Girders Handlebar Screws

Racing Pattern Girder Handlebar Bolts

New Item 1227 - Norton Girder Fork Handlebar Srews - Racing Type
. . . and for those that like that extra bit of 'Bling' on their Inter or early Manx - these girder fork bolts are of the same type as the original type (Item 1226) - but with these we have drilled and contoured the head for lightness.

Again - they also happen to look very pretty!

Just fitted a set to my own 1939 Gardengate Manx - Its top handlebar crown is modelling the bolts here..

Racing Pattern Girder Handlebar Bolts

M30/M40 Tank Platform Bolts
New Item 1229 - M30/M40 (i.e.to fit Pre-Featherbed Manx chassis)

Front Tank Platform Tank Bolts (Racing Type Drilled For Lockwire)
And similar to the 1227 Bolts - these bolts weere the type used to secure the front alloy petrol tank mount plate on Racing type (M30/M40, pre-Featherbed Manx) chassis.

These bolts have the same deep imperial reduced head as the original bolts - but we have drilled the head for lightniess and cross-drilled

them to take lockwire - a very useful addition, as these bolts would not normally be removed once fitted. 3 of these are fitted per tank brace - one with head upwards and two with head underneath as per the picture above

M30/M40 Tank Platform Bolts

Oil Tank Rubbers

01228 - Norton Girder Fork Mainspring Top Clasp Retaining Bolt

And finally - of these bolts all of similar design - these bolt is of the design used originally to secure the girder fork mainspring to the top clamp

This bolt shares the same Reduced Hex and imperial/deep head - but as can be seen is slightly different at its base. Again, copied from an original pattern, but in stainless steel on our in-house CNC

Rear Wheel Chain Adjuster Locknut

Items 1230 Rear Chain Adjuster Locknut - Plunger and Rigid Frames

This 'reduced hex' nut in stainless steel was used as the locknut on plunger rear wheel adjuster mechanisms - shown outermost on the original Norton assembly top left - which helped prevent one spanner catching the other nut - which would have happened if two larger nuts the same size had been used. But it is very common to find the outer nut chewed on original plunger bikes!

They can also be fitted to the rigid type allowing easier access for a spanner (although shouldered nuts were lalso made for rigid frames - I have seen both types made (and I will be making at some point)

New And Re-Stocked Magneto Parts or Lighting Equipment

BTH Platinum Points

0185B - BTH Platinum Points (as fitted to genuine BTH Competition Magnetos)

- Small Stock Available - Maybe for last time!!

I am pleased to be able to offer again (for the first time in about 10 years) a small quantity of genuine Platitnum points - as were originally fitted to genuine BTH competition magnetos.

These are manufacutred in the UK by my specialist points manufacturer - but as now pretty much retired . . . this could be the last time I am able to offer them.

They are defintely not cheap . . . but th genuine article, and I only have a handful of sets available . . . so be quick if you want them

. . . and 0185 - BTH Standard (Tungsten) Points

Back In stock

And manufactured by the same poeple that make the platnium points - I have also had a new batch of the standard Tungsten points made, so are now back in stock. Still high quality and manufactured in the UK - if you cannot afford the platinum variety these are still an excellent quality item

BTH Tungsten Points

BTH Pickup Screws in Stainless Steel

Item 0182 - BTH Pickup Screws in Stainless Steel To Original Profile

I have finally got a new batch of these screws manufactured on the CNC machine. They replicate the original BTH Pickup Screw, with correct shallow pan head, and come with washer . .

BTH HT Pickup

Back In Stock - Item 0180: BTH KD1 VErtical PIckup

Replacement BTH KD1 Vertical type HT pickup unit black plastic - a very popular part. Far more durable than the original bakelite items, which after all these years are now very fragile

We also sell the cork washer that fits under this unit, as well as the ferrules/springs

BTH Competition End Cover Screws

Item 0187 - BTH Kd1 TT Hex/Slotted Inspection Cover Screws

. . . and another popular item we CNC machine in-house, also got a new batch of these pretty little inspection cover screws manufactured, as per original profile - but in stainless steel, iwth washer

Cloth HT Racing Lead

Item 0732 - Ochre Coloured Cloth (waterproof) HT Lead

- As fitted to period Competition Magnetos - Back in Stock

Just a reminder that to go with our BTH (and Lucas) competition magneto parts - we also sell the authentic Ochre (with black flecks) HT lead that was very commonly fitted onto competition magnetos from the 1920's through to the 1950's. Very little of the original period HT lead has survived because it was covered with an early waterproof sheathing (early cellophane?) that perished and broke up. Interestingly - the genuine mid 1930's twin spark (Works Norton) magneto showin in the photograph came to me with the original 1930's HT lead of this type - but was totally perished and unusable . . . but looks great with the new lead fitted!

BTH Advance Retard Bottom Plug

Item 0190 BTH Advance/Retard Base Plug - Back in Stock

As you can see .. . been restocking many of the BTH KD1 parts.

This unusual looking part is fitted to the base of the advance/retard plunger housing and is often missing - resulting in the mechanism being allowed to foul up and jam more easily.

Rear Wheel Spindle Nuts

Item 0188 - BTH Competition 3 Screw Cover - Gasket

High quality brown gasket paper gasket - to fit BTH competition end covers - New batch back in stock.

Lucas DU142 8" Headlamps

Item 1089 - Replica Lucas 8" (Pre-War Norton type)

Headlamp Assembly

We introduced this item a couple of years ago . . . but quickly went out of stock and could not get another batch of them - until now.

Now back in stock - and FYI . . . we also supply our own stainless steel mounting bolts with the correct Norton head profile in stainless steel with every headlamp, to replace the lesser quality modern zinc plated items they come supplied with

V-Reg Sold State Regulator

Item 0574 - V-Reg Solid State Voltage Requlator (to replace Lucas or Miller Original Innards)

A very useful and reliable item - particularly if you are sill using an original Lucas or Miller Voltage Regulator. This modern 'solid state' Item can just be placed inside an original voltage regulator box and gives much better reliability. Now back in stock

SOHC Bevel Tubes, Bevel Nuts and Bevel Tube/Bevel Nut Kits

SOHC Vertical Bevel Top and Bottom Nuts

0014 - SOHC Vertical Shaft Bevel Nuts - In Stainless Steel

We have recently manufactured a new batch of our popular stainless steel bevel nuts - which are CNC machined from solid stainless steel bar, and have the correct imperial Hex size CNC milled - giving an excellent finish..

If I say so myself - these look very pretty and when fitted in conjunction with our stainless steel vertical tubes - can totally transform the look of the SOHC engine if replacing tired or leaking (chrome) originals

Also - as you can see below - our nuts have an improved design over the original Norton nuts - in that the inside of the nuts have grooves machined to accept modern Nirrile O rings - meaning they are far less susceptible to leaking oil - which originals are very prone to do.

500cc SOHC Vertical Bevel Tube

Items 0012 and 0013 - 350cc/500cc Stainless Steel Vertical Bevet Tubes - Finally back in stock!

We are finally showing our 500cc Stainless Steel Verticla bevel tubes as being back in stock, as well as 350cc and 600cc length variants.

In truth - this has been one of our most difficult parts to remanufacture - simply because the special 'Seamless/Imperial/Stainless' tubing that is required for making these is so difficult to source . . . and the suppliers have had their own issues with it recently (tolerances etc).

Thankfully, we have eventually been able to overcome these issues, (the tube is only available from one supplier - so we have to take that) - but it has been extremely costly and made the manufacutring of the tubes even more compllex than previously. But they are now back in stock!

350cc and 500cc SOHC Vertical Bevel Tube Set

Item 0016 - Vertical Tube/Nut - Full Kit

And finally - as all parts have now had new batch's made - we are able to offer the vertical bevet tube/nut components as a complete set - which is slightly cheaper than buying the parts individually (in both 350cc and 500cc sizes).

We have amended the description of this set this time though - so it now includes x2 of the crushable copper/mineral washers - previously sold seperately

G&S Valves For SOHC/OHV/SV Norton Singles - New Batch's Back In Stock

And Also 11/32" & 3/8" Valve Caps - Including New Thicknesses

In the last Newsletter I let customers know that we had an 'interim' re-stock of some of our SOHC G&S valves, but were expecting more in late Spring.

Well these took a bit longer to arrive - but have now all arrived and I spent a week or so checking them in August (including some help from my new helper and Grandaughter - Nova, see photo below), and they are now all relisted and available. I also re-photographed many of the original listings, so all are now up to date.

As I reported on in the last Newsletter - G&S are in my opinion the finest specialist valve manufacturers in the UK (and have been making valves for many years) - but last year, had to announce heavy price increases due to huge increases in production costs - heating being the main culprit . . . but we have tried to contain these costs as best we can - and not passed all of them on.

We also have a new stock of both OHV and 16H SV valves in stock - and I can confidently say they are the nicest ES2 valves I have ever seen - certainly much nicer than some of the pattern ones I remember, when playing wtih those engines 30 or 40 years ago!

Sorting G&S Valves
Unpacking and Bagging New Batch of G&S Valves
Just a few of the many boxes of new SOHC valves we have recently had delivered from G&S. We have lots of variants - both inlet and exhaust, so going through each variant and bagging them all can take some time.

Luckily (ahem!) I had Steph's daughter (our first grandaughter) Nova to help me this time! - while my wife and I were on babysitting duty!

Sorting G&S Valves with Nova

G&S SOHC Sized Inlet Valves

SOHC 11/32" Inlet Valves - Blank Stem and 'Sized Length' Valves
We have restocked in most of our most popular sizes - the SOHC Inlet valvs being 11/32" Stem diameter. We offfer a variety of valve head sizes (most popular 350cc/500cc and some later racing large valve head sizes) - and most valves are offered to popular 'lengths' (below) - or blank stem type (above) so you can cut the valve length to suit your own engine.

500cc G&S Inlet Valves

500cc SOHC Exhaust Valves
SOHC 3/8" Exhaust Valves

Similar to the SOHC Inlet valves - we also have back in stock both 'blank stem' and 'sized' length 3/8" valve stem exhaust valves in most popular lengths and head diameters for both 350cc and 500cc

Note that unlike 3/8" OHV (and sometimes CS1) valves - the SOHC valves have parallel collet grooves and flat heads

350cc SOHC Exhaust Valves

G&S OHV Valves

0678 - OHV (ES2) and SV (16H) Valves Re-Stocked

As well as all our SOHC Valves - we have also re-stocked our G&S OHV (see above) and 16H SV valves - and as you can see, differ from the SOHC valves in having tapered collet grooves, as well as (normally) different head size and lengths to most SOHC valves.

Incidentally - I often get asked about SOHC CS1 (i.e. Walter Moore Cricket Bat CS1 or later horizontal inlet tract Arthur Carroll CS1, using coil valve springs) - about their valves. Unfortunately there is no easy answer as so many previous owners look to have fitted whatever valves were available (and there were a number of original permutations) . . . but we can offer some suggestions if you wish to email me - paul.norman@racingvincent.co.uk

G&S OHV vs CS1 Valves options

OHV and CS1 Valve Guide

Valve Guides (OHV and SOHC)l

Just a reminder that to go with our valves we also manufacture OHV valve guides, as well as 11/32" and 3/8" SOHC valve guides (which are of the parrallel collar type, to take hairpin valve spring collars.

The OHV valve guides shown here (Item 0696) have a tapered collar and can be fitted to both cast iron and alloy cylinder heads

11/32" and 3/8" Valve Caps - Back in Stock - and New Sizes Added

11/32" Stem Valve Caps

1127 1 to 4 : 11/32" Valve Caps in 4 Sizes-
Back In Stock
We have just manufactured a new batch of 11/32" valve caps - and now available in 4 thicknesses.

Click on picture to go to the listing and have a read for more information.

3/8" Valve Caps

1128 1 to 4 : 3/8" Valve Caps in 4 Sizes- Back In Stock
And to go with the 11/32" valve caps - which as well as being suitable for SOHC Exhaust valves - are also useful for early CS1 or open rocker OHV engines (which are typically the models that customers ask for these valve caps for).

They may also be useful for some other makes or marques . .. but please note - only fit valve cups if you are comfortable to do so.

Other New And Re-Stocked Parts: Norton Transfers and New Facsimile Tax Discs

We have recently restocked our range of Norton Waterslide (and a few Vinyl) Transfers - but we have also increased our range to include some other well known types fitted to Norton singles of earlier or later periods

Black Norton Tank Transfer
0114 Norton Transfer - Main Tank Transfer - All Norton Single Models

Early 1930's - 1960's - BACK IN STOCK
Our most popular Waterslide transfer . . . these black transfers were showing out of stock a few weeks ago . .. but are now back and well stocked. They are of the type fitted to all Norton single cylinder road models from the 1930's through to the 1960's

Indicentally . .. this transfer is identical in size to the original Norton side panel tank transfer - I notice many restored Nortons, and many shown on the internet use a (later) too large 'Norton' black transfer

WD Gold Norton Transfer

NEW ITEM: - ITem 1231 - Norton WD16H/Big4 Norton Tank

Transfer - In Gold
Identical in size and font type as Item 0114 (see left), this Waterslide transfer is in Gold colour - and was of the type fitted to the petrol tank of many WD Norton 16H/Big4 models.

However, it is also a.nice alternative to the black transfer if you wish to be a bit different to the normal - or particularly if wanting to fit a Alloy tank to a Trials or Sports model

WD 16H Norton

Early Norton Tank Transfer

NEW ITEM: Item 1232 - Earliest Type Norton Tank Transfer

Another new transfer this month is this distinctive tank transfer (a vinyl type transfer, not waterslide) is of the very first Norton tank transfer design - as per this wonderful picture of Rem Fowler TT winning twin cylinder Norton after winning the (first) 1907 TT

(by the way, I am very fortunate to own an original autographed picture of Rem Fowler with this bike, with his own account of the race in pencil on the back of the photo - a real treasure)

Rem Fowler Norton

1920s Gold Chaincase Transfer

NEW ITEM: Item 1235 1920's Early Font Chaincase/Rear Mudguard Transfer

And another new transfer - and another early type - this being the 1920's font style in Gold,. Slightly smaller than the tank transfer of this era (which we also sell, in black) - this gold transfer is shown below as fitted to a flat tank Norton chaincase but is also suitable for a rear mudguard or carrier - or maybe a period pudding basin helmet!!

1920s Gold Chaincase Transfer

1950s Roadholder Fork Transfer

NEW ITEM: Item 1234 - Telescopic Fork 'Roadholder' Transfer

This transfer fits over the orignal brass oval Roadholder plates at the top of the roadgoing forkleg - which is useful if the orignal writing on the brass plate has been worn away, or as sometimes the case - is missing

Handle bar Srews

New Item: Item 1236 1950s 350cc Model 50

Moving to the 1950's - we have introduced 3 distinctive new rear mudguard transfers - this being for the 350cc Model 50 OHV model

1950s Rear Mudguard ES2 Transfer

NEW ITEM: Item 1237 1950's ES2 Rear Mudguard Transfer

. . . .And this one very similar - but for the 500cc OHV ES2 model

1950s Rear Mudguard 19S Transfer

New Item: Item 1238 1950s 19S (600cc) Rear Mudguard Transfer

And finally for the Rear Mudguard Transfers for 1950's models - the 19S 600cc rear mudguard transfer fitted to the spring frame (non-Featherbed) models

1950s Featherbed Manx Tank Linng

NEW ITEM: Item 1241 - Special Order Featherbed Tank

Manx Norton Type Lining (Vinyl Transfers)

- And finally another special order vinyl transfer - these large tank lining transfers are of the type fitted to Featherbed DOHC Manx petrol tanks

- actually quite a difficult lining to paint, as they do not actually follow the

underlying shape of a genuine tank . . . which a lot of restorers seem to miss. We can offer these by special order - expect a 4 week turnaround time

1930s OHV/CS1/SV Tank Lining

New Item: Item 1239 - Special Order - OHV Tank Panel Lining

(Vinyl Transfers)

For those that dont feel up to painting the lining themselves - we can now offer these special Black/Red 1930's tank panel transfers (the central black Norton transfer is their just to show it in place - it is sold seperately).

Also useful if you have a plain silver tank that you want to quickly spruce up!

1940s onwards oil tank level transfer

NEW ITEM: Item 1233 - Oil Level Transfers - Early 1950s Singles Onward

As fitted to most OHV and SV Norton single cylinder models from late 1940's onwards - particularly the black oil tank models

Other New or Restocked Products This Month
(i.e. some were previously showing Out of Stock on our Catalog)

Bottom Bevel Shim Sets
Item 0326B - Bottom Bevel Shim Sets . . . A small batch

back in stock
We have been showing these out of stock for some months - but recently while rearranging our stock - I found a small batch of the bottom bevel sets I thought we had ran out of.

We will be getting a new batch of shims made in about 6 months time . . .

but I know the price will have risen far more than these

crankcase oilway top screw

Item 0660:: SOHC Crankcase Oilway Top Screw - back in Stock
. . . These slotted head hex screws were fitted on the top of the bevel box on SOHC crankcases - to blank off the top oilway. They are often chewed or rusty and repllacing them iwth these stainless versions with hte correct head prfile helps the bevel platform look better

Cambox Quill

Item 0066 - SOHCCambox Quill (and Holder, and Big End Quill)

back in stock
Another item that has been out of stock for some months has been our SOHC (Racing type) camshaft quills. Although looking virtually identical to the Big End Quills fitted to all SOHC engines (and all prewar OHV/SV engines) - the cambox quill actually had a much smaller oil feed hole - and it is vitally important when stripping an SOHC engine with both fitted - not to get them mixed up - for obvious reasons!!

As well as the Cambox quills (click above), just a reminder that we also sell the similar BigEnd quill - Item 0080 (Below), as well as the shorter Featherbed variety cambox quill, and later Post-48 OHV/SV BigEnd Quill, as well as the steel quill holders, and (very popular) quill hex nuts in stainless steel. Quills should be regularly checked, as although made from a hard wearing bronze bearing material - the tips wear over time, which can lead to oil delivery/pressure loss.

Big End Quill

WD Damper Knob

Item 1222:: Norton WD Brown Damper Knobs - New Item
. . . if truthful, I cannot remember if I mentioned these in a previous Newsletter - but looking back, I cannot see them . . . so think I must have forgot! These are a nice copy of the rare 'Brown' type Norton tele damper knob . . . which I believe were fitted mainly to WD 16H bikes (I remember seeing originals offered in the 1970's when much WD stuff was appearing in autojumbles) - but they also make an interestng alternative to the

normal black type roadgoijng damper knob

1" Horn Button

Item 1215:: Horn or Kill Switch Button - For 1" Handlebars - New Item
We already sell this same horn button - as supplied by the manufacturer for for normal (postwar) type 7/8"handlebars - but as we are often being asked for handlebar controls and switches for earlier (pre-war) 1" handlebars -

1922 Facsimile Tax Disc

New Item 1244: Facsimile 1932 Tax Disc

Another early tax disc yyear joins our Facsimile UK Tax Disc colletion - this year being 1922 . . . the 2nd year of the introduction of the British motor tax for all vehichles.

This was the last year of black and white tax discs - before the introductoin of a yearly colour code from 1923 onwards . . . to allow the local Bobby to see at a glance if the vehichle owner had not bothered t to renew their yearly motor tax!

1932 Facsimile Tax Disk

New Item 1244: Facsimile 1932 Tax Disc
. . .. . . And moving forwards 10 years to 1932 - our most recent addition to the facsimile tax disc collection is the 1932 year.

By this time the principle of a different colour by year was well established

Nickel Plated Lever Petrol Taps
Item 1180 - Nickel Plated 'Lever' Type 1/4" x 1/4"Petrol Taps

- back in stock
We had previously offered a similar brass finish lever tap - As of the type most commonly fitted to later Manx types - but also a preference to some owners to the standard road type Push/Pull tap. The brass finish has now been replaced by a nickel plate finish - but most imprtantly the original tapered pin (which eventually started to leak when worn) mechanism has been replaced with a modern 'sliding ball' mechanism

0801 Gearbox Sprocket Left Hand Thread Nut

Item 0801 :: Norton Gearbox Sprocket - Left Hand Thread Thread

- back in Stock
. . . This popular gearbox item is now shoiwng back in stock.

Just a reminder we also sell the Norton gearbox sprocket in both normal early 'deep recess' type, as well as the later (mid 50's onwards) shallow recess type.

ThreeBond Silicone Sealant

New Item 1245- ThreeBond Gasket Sealant (Two Types Offered)

- Possibly the BEST Sealant Available

As well as offering a large range of Norton specific gaskets, and numerous gasket materials for those that like to make their own - there are also times when the use of a modern silicone gasket sealant is invaluable - particularly with older bikes - where sometimes mating faces are poor, or have large gaps.

Although 'ThreeBond' may not be a well known high street name - for those in the know it is considered possibly the best silicone gasket sealer on the market. I have been using it for the last 20 years - having been let in on it from a Suzuki dealership - it is manufactured in Japan (and I gather used by some of the big Jaapnese manufacturers).

As I have been asked about silicone sealant instead of gaskets numerious times by customers (and always advised this brand) - I have decided to become a Supplier of it ourselfs! - We can offer the silver coloured large tubes shown herer, but also a smaller black sealant (for those with magnesium castings) by Special Order.

Not as cheap as some other well known brands - but you get what you pay for !

0801 Gearbox Sprocket Left Hand Thread Nut

New Item 1252 :: Burman CP/GB Gearbox Sprocket - 17T or 18T available

As fitted to HRD Series A and many other Marques

As a final note - in making effort with my manufacturers to find early Sturmey Archer Sprocket types - I thought we might have got lucky with a very similar 'Burman' type which is available. Well sorry to say - having tried with a customer - I am told they will not fit the 1920's type Sturmey Archer spline . . . but just letting customers know we can obtain by Special Order this Burman type sprocket . . . in case you have a modelt with these fitted:

Bar Turned Ferrules - Email me if Required

Frankly - I dont like making these, as I have to turn them from solid stainless bar (very wasteful) . . . and they look so inconsequential it seems difficult to justify the cost - there is a lot of machining.

But - I know last time I made them they sold very fast . .. and I am going to have to make another small batch for another application anyway - so if you do want to reserve some . . . email me in the next 4 weeks on:: paul.norman@racingvincent.co.uk

But also - see 0979A above

1930 - 1938 OHV Pushrod Tubes and Fittings - still to come

Since the last Newsletter we have made the SOHC vertical bevel tubes I showed in 'To Do' section . . . but the accompanyning photo of the early stainless steel pushrod tubes (shown below) - remains outstanding . . . sorry - but the SOHC vertical tubes took far more time to make than they should of (annoyingly - because of raw material tolerance issues - very annoying when the price of bl**dy stuff has also increased so much in recent years).

Anyway . . . moan over .. . I am intending to move back to working on the OHV tubes shown here in the near future - or at least pass over the remaining tasks to one of the specialist companies I use for helping out - if I cannot get time myself. As a reminder, I also have the bottom hex nuts to CNC machine from stainless Hex bar at some point - which will be offered with the tubes

- Item 0091 SOHC Engine Cheesehead Screw Sets (and other Cheesehead screws) - these are a long term out of stock . . . and much as I have tried, I have not found the time to CNC new batchs. FYI - I did talk to my main CNC people (who make many of the parts we list, if not made by myself) - but with current stainless steel prices - and the amount of variations . . . the outlay cost (and final customer price) is just too high.
So I will endeavour to make new batchs myself on our CNC as soon as possible myself.
